Diabetes prevalence is increasing in the United States. As of 2017, 30.3 million people in the United States have diabetes (9.4% of population). Of these, an estimated 7.2 million persons are undiagnosed. Prediabetes, a condition that is associated with peripheral neuropathy and is a precurser to diabetes, affects 83.1 million or 33.9% of adults in the United States. Diabetes is most commonly diagnosed by fasting plasma glucose or by an A1C test.
