Diabetes prevalence is increasing in the United States. As of 2017, 30.3 million people in the United States have diabetes (9.4% of population). Of these, an estimated 7.2 million persons are undiagnosed. Prediabetes, a condition that is associated with peripheral neuropathy and is a precurser to diabetes, affects 83.1 million or 33.9% of adults in the United States. Diabetes is most commonly diagnosed by fasting plasma glucose or by an A1C test. An oral glucose tolerance test can also be used, but its use is primarily restricted to research settings.Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
