Chromotrope 2R is an acidic azo dye and organic sodium salt, chemically defined as the disodium salt of 4,5-dihydroxy-3-(phenyldiazenyl)naphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid. It is widely utilized as a biological staining agent in histology and cytology, particularly as a plasma stain in modified Gomori trichrome techniques for visualizing muscle fibers and cellular structures.
