Nile Red is a highly lipophilic benzophenoxazone fluorescent dye utilized for the localization and quantification of intracellular lipid droplets and hydrophobic domains. Characterized by strong solvatochromism, it exhibits environment-sensitive fluorescence, shifting from a bright yellow-gold emission in neutral lipids to a deep red emission in polar membrane environments while remaining virtually non-fluorescent in water.
